BizFilings' Ultimate Business Planner

BizFilings Ultimate Business PlannerA well-conceived business plan can be the most important factor in the success of a business. A business plan can help you determine if your business will be a financial success, define your business goals, and identify the best methods for achieving those goals. It can be used internally to communicate goals and strategies to key employees — and can be used externally to obtain funding.

Many investors want to know the "ins and outs" of your business. As a result, your business plan needs to explain your products and services, markets, competition, industry, operations, and opportunities. Without a solid plan, a business may lose focus, market share, customers, money, and potential investors, or a new business may never get off the ground.

You don't need any special business expertise to use Ultimate Business Planner. Its easy-to-use, step-by-step approach breaks down the process of writing a business plan into two main sections -- forecasting your financials and writing your plan.

BizFilings' Ultimate Business Planner guides you through each business-planning step quickly and easily. Developed for entrepreneurs by small-business experts and small-business owners, Ultimate Business Planner simplifies the process of writing a business plan and gives you expert advice, tips, and hints based on proven business practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is a business plan?

A. A business plan defines your business goals and identifies the strategies for achieving those goals.

Q. Why do I need a business plan?

A. Business plans provide a blueprint of how a business will succeed. A business plan is often required for outside investment. Banks and investors want to ensure that business owners have a solid plan in place for a new venture before financing it.

While the business planning process doesn't guarantee success of a new business, it decreases the odds of failure. It reduces risk. Before putting their life savings on the line, responsible business owners prepare a business plan to ensure their investment will not be lost.

Q. Should individuals reading my business plan sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)?

A. Non-disclosure agreements typically aren't required for viewing business plans. Venture capital investors and bankers are aware that information provided within a business plan for the purposes of financing is confidential. A "confidentiality clause" added to the beginning of the plan is often sufficient. It might be a good idea to consult a lawyer if you believe an NDA is required.

Q. How far out should I plan?

A. As a general rule, for an "average" business, a five-year plan is a reasonable starting point. But that doesn't mean mapping out, month-by-month, or week-by-week, what is going to happen over the next 60 months. The level of detail will drop as your plan covers periods further into the future. The cash flows that are tracked weekly or monthly during the first year of operation may be projected by quarter in the second year, and annually in the third through fifth years. Just how this transition from detail to the big picture is managed will depend on your specific business.
